Be My Valentine Week

I call this Valentine's week and not day because everyone will be celebrating at different times of the week. I did some sprucing up for Valentine's and will share pictures along with "Will You Be My Valentine." She is all in red and white as the old fashion Valentines I used to receive way back when I was a little girl. How I love those old cute Valentines with the sweet sentiments and the words "I Love You" printed on them. I usually take the old cards, I've collected at antique places, and admire them for inspiration. Then I take out all the ones I have received from my husband and read them all over again.
I especially like the ones with cupids but all are my favorite.
I know everyone has some kind of Valentine tradition and this is one of mine.
This little poem appears on one of my oldie Valentines.

   You think your heart secure,
   Against bold Cupid's darts;
   But don't you be to sure
   The Lad hath many arts,
   Some scheme of his will work,
   He's sly, his tricks are fine,
   Beware, a dart may lurk

Balboa Park

My last post from my trip to San Diego is the Spanish Village Art Studios in Balboa Park. I had visited this wonderful park before but only this time did I run across the Art Studios and it was fabulous! There are 37 working studios/galleries who host over 200 artists, local painters, sculptors, metalsmiths, jewelry designers, clay artists, gourd artists, photographers, printmakers, fiber artists, basket makers, mixed media artists, glass artists, enamel artists, and many more. This artsy place is serene, colorful, and beautiful. I walked around entering some of the studios, talking with the artists, admiring their work, and of course made a few purchases. It's a fabulous place to feed your creative mind and speak with like minded people.

These pictures will show you the wonderful antique toys, miniatures, clothing, and antiques of the future for sale. There was so much to see that people had a difficult time making their minds up as to what they would purchase. It was a two day show and I saw quite a few people take advantage of that. Remember, I didn't take pictures of every space so of course there was lots more to see than my pictures. It was so much fun!

San Diego Crossroads Teddy Bear and Doll Show & Sale

Had a great time at the San Diego show and sale. There were two floors full to the brim of artists, wonderful antiques, and miniatures to see and purchase. Lots of people attended and kept us all busy at our tables. I did manage to take pictures at different times during breaks from my table and hope to give you a glimpse of what was there and who was there. We also attended the Toby Industry Choice Awards dinner.

Hi Bloggers!
I just returned from my trip to San Diego and will be posting pictures of the show and some wonderful places I visited. Met some wonderful people and spent time with friends that I only see at shows. All wonderful!
I found this incredible shop that specializes in Mexican imports. They have lots of Day of the Dead and of course, to my delight, some awesome fabric.
For now, unpacking and getting back into the swing of things. Tomorrow I will begin posting some pictures.

We had a high in the 70's the other day and that is unheard of, here in Texas, especially in early January. Usually we're dealing with frigid weather and ice. So to enjoy the wonderful day we went to the Japanese Gardens, here in Fort Worth, TX.
I can't believe I had never gone and boy have I've been missing out. The gardens were beautiful this time of the year, I can imagine them in the Spring and Summer! Took some wonderful photos which I would like to share with you.

We had a fun relaxing time enjoying the warm sunshine.
After we went antiquing and then dinner at Chuy's.

As the day draws near I am in a nostalgic mood, remembering Christmas in the past. Remembering the tamale parties where we all took turns making them. The laughter when teaching the newbies of the party how to spread and wrap a tamale. The many wonderful sweets around the dessert table. The special people who came to visit and the beautiful timeless Christmas cards I have received in years past. I especially like the memory of laying under the Christmas tree and admiring its beautiful lights from the inside. There is nothing more spectacular than that!
We all have memories of Christmas past and it has been special sharing some of them with you.

The Song of Mary (Luke 1, 46-55)

In Luke we find the words of Mary, mother of Jesus, expressing her joy of God's intervention in her life. We catch a glimpse of Mary's deep awareness and knowledge of her Lord. Through her inspired words, the God of history is revealed culminating in His compassion for the whole world by sending His Christmas gift wrapped up in a manger.
Mary used magnificent, meaning "to glorify or magnify," to initiate her praise in response to God's revelation that she was to deliver the long awaited Messiah, the Savior of the world.
Mary's faith and obedience as a servant of God gave her strength she would need to endure communal hostility for her unwed pregnancy, not only to embrace the favor of her Master, but to respond with sincere joy and adoration.
In the life of Mary, God provided His own Son, who would take up the sins of the world and Mary watched, unable to save Him from His destiny of the earthly rejection and death on the cross. However, Jesus defeated death in glorious resurrection, paid for sins in full, and ensured eternal salvation for believers.

This year I decided to go minimal. Usually I put up a number of Christmas tress but this year I'm not feeling the overall decorating vibe so I'm sticking to the nostalgia of Christmas and, most important, the real reason for Christmas; celebrating the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I want to focus on celebrating the many blessings the Lord has given me, focus more on Him, and focus more on helping others.
Getting ready for volunteering at the Grace Christmas Cottage makes my Christmas a joyous one. There is nothing like spreading joy to others!

My dear friend, Geri Williams from Washington State, came for two weeks of fun and classes in needle felting. Everyone who took her classes had lots of fun, learned alot, and took home wonderful needle felted pieces. I had lots of fun visiting with her and made a piece together. "Shrewbettina" was needle felted by Geri and was dressed by me. I just love her and she is only 5" tall!

The Fairy Shoe

There once came a day, for creative play, when the artist decided to make a pair of fairy shoes. As she took out her supplies her mind was filled with the idea of making a pair of shoes small enough for tiny fairy feet, in hopes that someday she would create a fairy to go with her shoes. As she completed the fairy shoes she began to get tired so off to bed she went. As morning came she rose out of bed in hopes of adding the finishing touches to her shoes and setting time to admire them some. As she approached the work table in her studio she noticed one of the shoes was missing. She looked everywhere for it but it was no where to be found. Everyday she would take a look around moving things around in her studio in hopes of finding the little lost fairy shoe.
One morning the artist held the lonely little fairy shoe in her hand and decided to finish it, before going on to other creative things. Her mind wondered if a fairy had stopped by, tried on the shoes, and maybe was startled and couldn't take the shoe off in time before she would be discovered. Or maybe the fairy who visited took the one shoe to show the other fairies what this artist was creating. Alas, the whereabouts of the missing shoe would remain a mystery.
One bright morning the artist couldn't take the lonely shoe off her mind and decided to create another. As she walked in her studio there on the table was the other fairy shoe next to the lonely one, which was lonely no more. The artist could not believe her eyes! She had looked for that shoe many days and there it was pretty as a pair. The artist took the little shoe in her hand and added the detail that it lacked. "Now," she said, "The fairy shoes are complete" as she smiled and took a deep breath.

The tiny pair of fairy shoes sit on her work table in hopes that one day a fairy will appear and take the shoes with her as a gift for her inspiration.

If you live or will be visiting Wisconsin please don't miss visiting the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts in Cedarburg. This Gallery is a preserved timber farm barn located on an historic 1850's farmstead. The gallery is open during regular business hours with a nominal entrance fee. The "Saints, Celestials, & Snowmen" exhibit will be going on till January 8, 2012. On exhibit are artist made figures, quilts, and other fiber arts, an exhibit you don't want to miss.

Celebration

Today people will go to the cemetery carrying large bunches of flowers, candles, candle holders, and wooden crosses. Thousands will gather to decorate their loved ones graves with these offerings. Later other family members will bring food and drinks. Other people will be outside the cemetery and the market, which will stay opened all night, selling food, drinks, and sweets. Locals and tourists are welcomed to walk in the cemetery, the market, or plaza where people also erect shrines for viewing and judging. This is a celebration so music will be played around the plaza and poetry will be read. Indigenous people will play instruments dating back to the Aztecs at their grave sites and burn incense in the copal. The family members will stay all night by the grave sites and will pick up in the morning. This is not only a religious celebration but a family and community reunion that dates back to pre-Hispanic times.

Dia de los Angelitos

Today is when the indigenous people of Latin America welcome their departed children's souls to their home. Their ofrenda has been set up and the path of marigolds has been laid out. I can only imagine the sight!

I attended the Dia de los Muertos celebration in Fort Worth and took pictures. Also took pictures at the Gallery where my Catrianas were on exhibit. Day of Remembering

The last post of Day of Remembering is dedicated to our lovable pets and how much they teach us.
We have always had the pleasure of owning a dog, but our little dog stands out from the rest. Her name was Xuxa, a chihuahua and mini pin mix. The moment she came into our lives she brought joy with her. When she would get into trouble she would pull her ears back, squint her eyes, her mouth was pulled back and her face appeared like she was smiling. Who could be upset at that little face. She was always indoors and when she would go out to the back yard she would immediately take her job as head guard dog seriously. She would fast walk along the fence and along the perimeter of the house a couple of times before relaxing. One time we noticed something was different with her face but couldn't pin point what it was. Later we noticed her nose had grown to double and triple it's size! She had been stung by a bee! She wasn't feeling very well but we all had a laugh at her expense. We took a few pictures and gave her a children's benadryl in hope she would feel better and she did. Another day I was out in the back yard and noticed she had eaten a rat poison cake. I came inside to break the news to my daughter that surely Xuxa would be passing on. Xuxa just looked up at us, while my daughter cried and hugged her, as if saying, "What's the big deal?" I took action and called poison control. After a couple of servings of peroxide she began to regurgitate the poison rat cake, as she made her cute faces at us knowing she was in trouble and didn't feel well. The next day she was all well and on guard duty. After this scare we knew she had to have nine lives.
As she got on in age she slowed down a bit and began loosing weight. One day we noticed she had gone blind and was maneuvering around the house just fine. She began to lose control of her bladder but she always made it to the puppy pad. The only thing was that as soon as her front paws touched the pad she would relax and pee not realizing that the main half was not on the pad. It became hard on me as I was the one home cleaning. Till one day I gave up my frustration and began learning and listening to what Xuxa was teaching me.
I took her to the vet for check ups when I thought she was asleep to long and maybe sick. He would tell me she was fine, the end was coming near, and that I would know when it was time.
My heart opened and began to receive the life lessons this little soul was teaching me. She was teaching me patience and perseverance. Even if she couldn't see she still managed her routine just fine and so what if she had a mistake outside the pad. She helped me understand the life of a blind elderly pup who was happy and content with her state of being.
She became tiny, thin, and like a puppy. We all took turns carrying her and loving her and she returned that love right back. Her love and patients with herself and with the people around her was amazing.
Finally the day had arrived as she whimpered with pain, she looked tired, and somehow spoke to my heart, with her little faces, that it was time for our final goodbye. We all loved on her that day and in the afternoon took her to the vet, he smiled at me and said, " I told you, you would know." I hugged her ever so gently and kissed her little forehead. She made her little smiley squinty eye face at me and went to the arms of the vet.
Our dear Xuxa will always be remembered with tears of joy and laughter, but most important I will remember the life lessons she taught me and that remain in my heart.

She new I just had to have them.
She knows me well!

The person I most want to share memories with you is my maternal grandmother. She was a woman of distinction. Always proper in her ways. Always nicely dressed and groomed. She taught me manners and respect towards others.
She would take my sisters and I to the mercado to buy small pottery dishes to play with. We would walk by the pinatero ( pinata maker) to say hello and admire his wonderful pinatas. I remember the vivid colored papers he would use to decorate them. We couldn't walk past the prickly pear stand without having our fill of red, green, and white tunas (cactus fruit). We would stop at the candy store window to admire the beautiful candy display before going inside. This is where I saw sugar skulls and other candy shaped like skeletons and animals for the very first time. Grandmother would buy hard candy and let us pick our favorite Mexican candied fruit. We walked home laughing and enjoying ourselves that by the time we arrived we would all take a nap on grandmothers big bed. I remember getting close to her, feeling loved and secure.
Fond memories come to mind of how we would laugh when she would mimic her favorite television chef while making her potato salad. When she would turn on the radio and begin to dance and sing her favorite songs, encouraging us to dance with her. How she would, patiently, show us how to embroider a handkerchief with brightly colored floss. Every young lady carries a handkerchief so we all had one. Later she would show us how to paint on fabric with fabric paints that came in tubes. She made us all a white dress, one day, and painted big colorful daisies on them. I remember showing off my daisy dress to my friends.
We did lots of things together and with everything there was a story and a reason. I learned so much from my grandmother and will always be thankful for having her in my life while growing up.
She nurtured and led my creative spirit in believing that doing things by hand was special. When I am in my studio and in my own world my thoughts go to that beautiful house in Ciudad Juarez, Chih. There I spent my summers learning to be creative, happy, and fulfilled.

Art Of Remembering

Lady Butterfly

In remembering people who helped shape my life, I fondly remember my mother in law. She was a very strong woman and yet as gentle as they come. While in Mexico, she moved heaven and earth to see that her children had everything to succeed. She new she didn't have much, and never complained, but there was never a lack of love. She overflowed with love and affection.
I was the first daughter in law to come into the family and immediately I was shown the same love and affection as her daughters. Anyone who new my mother in law was blessed with her kindness and affection. One way she showered us with affection was with her wonderful cooking. She fed everyone who visited at any hour of the day or night. She never let me in the kitchen to help, but she so enjoyed sitting with us at the table watching us enjoy her cooking. We would sit for hours talking and sharing stories. She always had an ear for us, an understanding heart, and words of encouragement. We never left her home without a kiss and a hug.
In the mornings she would make a complete meal for my father in law to take to work and share with his co-workers. At noon she would make another full meal for whoever popped in on their lunch break from work or school. The evening meal was for everyone who visited. Sometimes someone would arrive with a craving for a certain dish and immediately she would get up and make it. Just so she could satisfy that craving.
Everyone had their favorite dishes and she new them all. When she would plan on making my favorite, chile rellenos, she would call me so that I can come over. She wouldn't start the meal till after I had arrived so the chile rellenos could be fresh and hot. Forget the diet at her house. She always made me feel special and I new she loved me just as I loved her. She was always there for me when I needed a word of encouragement. She helped me through some tough times, especially when my grandmother was sick. My husband was stationed in Korea at the time and she would take care of my kids while I visited my sick grandmother over the border. When she passed we cried together. She comforted me with her kind and loving works.
She was a special person whom God filled with blessings to bless others. Everyone she touched or crossed her path were truly blessed in knowing her. She left a huge imprint on my heart, teaching me to share love and compassion and to live a grateful life.
I will always miss her smile, her welcoming hug, and her cooking.

the art of remembering

On this Sunday I am remembering the first and most important man in my life, my dad.
He worked long hours and still made time for his girls after work. He would give us all his attention as we talked his ear off, while he had his dinner. He helped with our homework and made time, with loving patience, to comb our long tangled hair before we went to bed.
Always a quiet man but lovingly strong when he needed to be.
Sundays were our special family days when he would tell us his stories while mother cooked for us. He would tell us stories of his childhood in Spain and how he ran with the gypsies for awhile. He told us about how, as a young man and reporter, he rode the train during the Mexican Civil War gathering stories for the newspapers and helping with the sick and wounded. His hearts desire was to become a doctor but didn't finish his education for lack of funds.
Some of his wonderful stories were so colorful that I think back today and wonder if they were all true. Anyone who has seen the movie "Big Fish" would know my dad. Kind, compassionate, thoughtful, and a great story teller.
A fond memory is of how he would take turns dancing with us at his company parties because there was a lack of young men to dance with. At first I felt embarrassed but then I became overwhelmed with a sense of pride, dancing with my dad. Mother would have to wait her turn.

One of his most happiest times in his life was the birth of his first grandchild. He nurtured and loved six daughters and the Lord blessed him with a male grandchild. As I watch my nephew, now a grown man, I see my dads' mannerisms and character unfold.
My father taught me to grow up without fear, to grab the bull by the horns, and get out there and live life to the fullest. Often, when I least expect it, I see and feel his hand holding mine when I am holding hands with my husband. Emotions fill my heart and I sense that, at that very moment, he is there with me.
I miss you dad.

"Dia de los Muertos" at Artes De La Rosa Art Gallery

I am proud to announce that my Day of the Dead Catrinas will be on exhibit at the Artes De La Rosa Art Gallery at the Rose Marine Theater in Fort Worth, Texas. Come see this magnificent one of a kind Day of the Dead exhibit which begins this Friday October 7th, 2011 and ends on November 21st, 2011. There are lots of wonderful and colorful works of art on display, along with alter installations. This is a must to see!

Meet the artist reception will be held on October 29th, 2011 along with the 9th Annual Day of the Dead Celebration.
There will be music dancing, face painting, and food vendors. "Zora", the gypsy, has arrived at her destination. She will be on display at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas. She will be part of The Treasures of the Gypsy display. This years theme is "Renaissance Gypsy."

I returned from the first All Dolls Are Art Conference in Austin, TX and it was great. The theme was "Toys In The Attic". Classes were offered with Marilynn Huston, Cindy Mahlstadt, Lisa Renner, Barbara Shoenoff, Maria Teresa Stoa, and Lauren Vicek, all wonderful instructors. We had a fabulous showroom to shop and admire the art which was opened all day and all weekend for our shopping pleasure. There was a doll pin swap, a silent auction, and a community sewing room for anyone wanting to sew dolls benefiting Austin's Children Shelter. The evenings were free to do whatever we wanted so most of us socialized, kept up with old friends, and made new ones. Amy Nelson who put together this conference along with her committee did a wonderful job. Our breakfast and lunch were provided so we didn't have to leave the hotel unless we wanted to shop or have dinner outdoors. The closing banquet was on Sunday with our guest speaker and entertainer elinor peace bailey. We took home an artist doll table favor made by doll artist's attending.

The preparation for next years ADAA Conference in in the making. It will be held July 26-29, 2012 and the theme will be "The World Of Make Believe". The classes will be posted on Oct. 1, 2011, www.alldollart.com., and registration opens Oct. 31, 2011.

It's the dog days of summer, but at my house Halloween is in the air! Always my favorite holiday to create for.
When this artist gets in the Halloween mood she runs with the ideas rolling in her head. It helps that Halloween surrounds me when I am working in my studio and ideas come and go.

I just finished Gracie. She is young girl off on a stroll with her new purse. She has Tibetan lambs wool for her beautiful red hair and her purse is a silkworm casing which is dyed and hand beaded, it measure only an inch. A fun little piece to bead. She measures 13" and wears bamboo felt shoes with glass beads around her ankles.

My daughter returned from a trip to San Antonio and brought me this skelly head with pan dulce (sweet bread) on her hat. mmmmmm A wonderful piece.

I can't believe we are in the middle of summer and time just keeps passing by. I have been busy creating and taking my mind off the electric bill. It has been a very hot and humid summer and it's good to be inside creating.
I have still been on my creative outings, of course, but with this heat they have been kept short.
Meet "Victorie", she is celebrating the fourth of July with a bang. Her smiling face makes me smile.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Fourth of July weekend. While celebrating lets take time to honor our country and pray for our soldiers who are making sure we live and play in the land of the free.

As we were in Philadelphia we took a trip to New York for shopping and site seeing. I new I could find fabulous fabrics and beads, while taking in the sites. New York is such a city of creative ideas, sites, and sounds for me that I took it all in. I found some fabulous beads at reasonable prices, and I bought so much I decided to skip on the fabrics and go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to take in the arts. We did a lot of walking ooohing and aaughing and of course had to get M $ M's at their fabulous store. As we left the city the idea and colors for Charlotte came to me and the creative process began.

I was inspired to share some of my treasures I found while visiting the state of Maryland and a wonderful place called Ellicott City. The name sounded magical to me. We ventured off to Historic Main Street and spent the day enjoying antiques, arts and crafts, jewelry, homemade gourmet chocolates , clothing, stained glass and much more in old historic buildings. We visited Taylor's Antique Mall and found a set of musician gollies measuring under 2 inches. As we strolled and enjoyed the scenery we went into the Forget-Me-Not-Factory. A whimsical other worldly store filled with all things fantasy including a stone garden full of fairies. The store had three floors of wonders and I spent time in there looking at everything imaginable. Then my husband spotted the wonderful wooden 11 1/2" doll in a show case. My face broke into this wide big smile and my heart screamed inside my chest, I've found her! I called for the attendant to take her out of her enclosure for inspection then I saw the twenty dollar price tag, I was at a loss for words and she came home with me. After some much needed composure I spotted the beautiful fairy sitting on a beautiful pink orb that also came home with me and joined the others in my collection. We walked much and enjoyed this historical gem of wonderful shops and restaurants.

I was fortunate to go to the doll museum and it was closed. My husband and I were peeking in the window when Barbara Whiteman came to open the door, she had seen us peeking. She is such a nice and informative person, we became instant friends. She showed us around the museum explaining how her collection came to be. We had a very good time. This is a must stop if you find yourself in Philadelphia one day.

Best of Show Award Judging

Some of the doll artist's signed up for the Helen Bullard award judging. We had to submit a signed "signature piece," meaning the doll reflects the style and image that is most recognized by the world of collectors. It also means that the piece will come with the artist's signature. Most importantly, it is a one of a kind piece. There were also artist's who submitted for the Beverly Port award judging which were teddy bears and the same rules applied. These are pictures of the dolls and some teddy bears submitted for judging. Sorry I didn't get the names of some the artists, the crowd was to large.

Helen Bullard was the founder of the National Institute of American Doll Artists (NIADA) in 1963, and championed the idea that original hand made dolls should be considered an art form.

Beverly Port is a multimedia teddy bear and doll artist, and international award winning designer, author, consultant, and speaker on "The Art of the Teddy Bear." She is known as the "mother of the teddy bear artistry."

Philadelphia Doll & Teddy Bear Convention

I am back and boy did I take pictures! I have some wonderful to share with you.. There was so much to see and admire! The doll artist present were awesome and brought their most beautiful pieces to sell and to admire. I was on overload the whole time. I wish I could have taken even more pictures of their pieces but the crowd of people wouldn't let me through. The three day convention was wonderful and there were lots of people in attendance not only for the whole three day event but also for the Saturday show. I met and made some wonderful new friends and had a chance to visit with good friends. The meals were awesome and the hotel staff was wonderful to put up with so many people. I think I can speak for everyone that we all had a fantastic time at this event and are waiting for news of the next one. Now for the pictures, enjoy.

Today is Mother's Day in Mexico so Happy Mother's Day for the second time. I hope everyone had a wonderful day and took time for themselves out there in Blog Land.
I will be away in Philly at the Doll and Teddy Bear Convention and will stay over for a nice vacation to take in the sites and sounds. I will most definitely have pictures and stories to post when I return. I am so looking forward to reuniting with old friends and making new ones.
I will also be on the look out for the Shrine Auction date and will inform everyone as soon as Rebecca lets us know the date. So be patient and don't give up on this worthwhile cause. It's going to be great! I had a sneak peak at the other art work and wow it's definitely going to be great this year.

"Fiesta"

It's Fiesta Time!

Oh, I can hear the music playing!

For the 2011 shrine I painted the inside of the cigar box with two coats of gesso and two coats of green acrylic paint. I cut out a piece of Day of the Dead fabric and hand beaded with glass beads. I glued it to the inside back of the cigar box. I glued pieces of scrap book paper, in a party theme, to the sides of inside of box and on the front and back of the cigar flap/top. I photo copied more Day of the Dead pieces of fabric on card stock, trimmed to fit, and glued them over the party themed paper on the front and back of the cigar box flap/top. I trimmed with shiny large rick rack in bold loud colors of blue and pink, then added sequin accents. I glued down small dishes and marigolds to the bottom of the box, small enough so they will not obscure the dancing Catrina. I added more marigolds to the top of the box and placed a plastic guest on top. To a wooden spool I glued more scrap book paper in a music note theme and painted one end green. Another guest is glued on this spool. He will keep the door opened when the shrine is opened and when closed he will sit at the top of the box and join his date. On the side of the box I hung a handmade cloth pinata of which I hand beaded and added ribbon streamers. Also on the sides of the cigar box I trimmed with more rick rack. The cigar box measures 5” X 7 3/4” and 2 3/4” deep.

This years shrine is the remembering of our gathering of familia, compadres, and good friends in the celebration of life. Remembering the sounds of laughter, the dancing, and the smells of good home cooked favorites is what this shrine represents.

In the Hispanic culture there is always time set for fiestas. Whether it's for the birth of a new family member, a baptism, a home coming, or a gathering of friends on a Sunday afternoon; we celebrate. We grow up with music and dance. Music surrounds our life, in our home, on the bus, at the stores, and on the streets. That sound that makes us smile, move our hips and shoulders, you know what I'm talking about. The sounds that take you back to good memories. Gathering with our compadres, familia, and friends is a welcomed opportunity to dance and share a good home cooked meal of all our favorite dishes. At fiestas we bond and share our lives happenings. Great memories are made at fiestas, sharing in the breaking of the pinata whether it's for the kids or for the adults. No matter how old we are, whether a toddler or like our abuelitos, we will go on dancing and gathering at fiestas forever.

Shrine Auction

It's time to shrine for the Street Children of Oaxaca!
Participating artists and I will be uploading our shrines to the Gallery of Hope this coming week. http://corazon.typepad.com/gallery_of_hope/ On April 29 they will be up for public viewing and on May 1st the bidding will begin and will close on May 7th. Remember that one hundred percent of proceeds go directly to this grassroots organization which help children of Oaxaca attend school, pay for uniforms, shoes, and a daily meal.
This keeps poor children off the streets and prevents them from selling trinkets to help support their family.
At this time I will share a glimpse of this years shrine and will post the opened shrine as it gets close to the April 29 view date. This years theme is Fiestas.

The music is playing, the pinata has been hung, the table is set,
and the drinks are cold. It's fiesta time!

Opening Reception Night

Thank you to all my dear friends and family who accompanied me at the, "A World of Enchantment", opening reception. It was so nice to see each and everyone of you. The opening was a success with many people stopping by to admire the wonderful works of art and photographs. Everyone enjoyed food and wine, took pictures, or had their picture taken with the art dolls. The comments expressed by attendees made my heart soar to the highest. Everyone attending enjoyed the exhibit very much and were doll struck at the intricate and detail work that went into these beauties. I think Spring has finally sprung! We have been having a few days of cool weather and was wondering where our spring was? Finally I began to see glimpses of the plants that I had planted for spring blooms and all of a sudden POW color. These are so beautiful I had to take pictures. Enjoy them as much as I am.

That I know of, this is the first time that art dolls will be showcased in an art gallery here in my area. So it is quite exciting to be part of this exhibit.
The art exhibit will be at the Keller Town Hall Gallery and will run from April 1st through April 29th, 2011.
The opening reception and meet the artists will be April 14th from 7pm to 9pm. This coincides with the monthly Gallery Art Walk in the Keller Arts District.

Sofia

Sofia is finished and sits on her pink chair. She looks so different from the first glimpse I gave of her.
I think she turned out pretty good. Her hair is tibetan lambs wool and has hours upon hours of glass bead work on her face. She is all cloth with wool felt shoes, her necklace and bracelets are wood beads from an old set.
A fun challenge in creating my biggest piece yet, measuring at approximately 24 inches sitting down.
Now to my next piece!

My eyes and heart were opened as I clicked on the "Shelter Box" video and wanted to share this with all who come to my site. With the devastation in Japan we wonder what we can do to help and if our donation is going to an organization that is truly making a difference for people in need. Shelter Box is just that organization. I had not heard of it. The headquarters are in the UK, but now the US is affiliated with this great organization and we can be a part of it. I have been madly trying to finish my biggest piece ever. She will measure approximately 24" sitting. Life has thrown a few stumbling rocks along the way but I am back at creating and finishing her. In this post I will show you a sneak peek of Sofia. I'm pretty proud of her and so far she is coming through just as I have envisioned her. Stay tuned for her unveiling when I am finished with her dress, hair, and other embellishments.

How Lilith Came To Be

Lilith sat around on her artists' table for quite awhile and was destined for the trash. Her face had a few smudges and that won't do. One day as her artist was straightening out her studio she came upon Lilith. As their eyes met her artist smiled and put Lilith down. In a moments notice Lilith had a yellow hat to wear. Her artist began to thread her magic needle and bead, as Lilith looked on. Her artist kept picking up bead after bead in vibrant colors to adorn her new hat. Lilith smiled inside and began to think of herself as special. She felt proud.
Her artist went on to embellish Lilith more till she felt that her work was complete. She added a pin back to the back and Lilith became a piece to be worn with pride.

Celluloid Carnival Cupie Dolls

No More Snow Please

This was yesterday morning, Feb. 4th, when we received four inches of new snow on top of the already inches of ice. Lucky for us today all is melting away. Although it was beautiful I can actually say I was pretty tired of it.
It was a good excuse to create in my studio almost everyday I was snowbound and that is a good thing! Stayed warm and cozy sewing away.
Praise the Lord we all were well and our needs were met.

Jazz Man

Meet Jazz Man, my latest figure. I named him after listening to the 70's/80's song of the same name.
I think he's quite handsome.
It was fun choosing the colored beads for his facial expression, especially his beard. His hair was somewhat of a challenge but I remembered I had some of this wonderful chenille. A friend had given me a small ball of this chenille years ago and had challenged me to use it in one of my figures. All of a sudden his hair came alive. I also, had a great time picking out this funky fabric for his body. I was anxious to use it and see how it would turn out, pretty kool.
This is only the second male beaded face male I have ever made. It made for a nice challenge to get me away from female figures and to create outside of my comfort zone. I hope you can see the colors I used clearly.

I named her MayBelline due to her wonderfully long bead eyelashes.
She can't seem to stop looking at her face in the mirror she 's holding.
She has about twelve hours of work on her face and a few more on the body and embellishment.
A worthwhile joy for me creating her.

The Fog

"Head too, like a cave, I need you to be my cave today, at least for an hour," I explained.

January brings cold weather and a desire for rejuvination of your body and soul. It's nice to sit inside with a hot cup of tea and daydream of new creations that soon will come to be. In the room of our own surrounded with our supplies we can quietly sit and begin a stitch here and there. I have been doing just that and have finished my first two dolls of the new year. There is another one in the making and will soon appear along with other ideas and work. It's nice to make time to rejuvinate before the year gets hectic again.

This is Lola, cheerfully ready for Valentines Day.

Dia De Los Reyes

Today is the day the Magi arrived in Bethlehem to see the Christ Child, bringing with them gifts of gold, frankincense , and myrrh. In Mexico and Latin countries it's tradition that the three kings Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar, bring gifts to children on January 6th. On the previous evening children bring out a pair of shoes and place them outside their bedroom door or sometimes outside their home door so they can be filled with small toys, candy, nuts, and fruit. On January 6th children find their shoes have been filled. Later that evening everyone gathers to partake of the Rosca de Reyes or Ring of Kings. This is a cake in the shape of a ring filled with fruit and nuts. Everyone is careful when taking the first bite as there is a small baby doll baked in the ring representing the Christ Child. Whoever gets the small doll in their slice hosts the next gathering of friends and family on February 2nd, Dia de la Candelaria. There might be a pinata in the shape of a star for the kids to break and even another one on the Dia de la Candelaria. February 2nd marks the end of the Christmas holidays and it's when the Christ Child is removed from the manger (Nacimiento) and stored away along with the rest of the Nativity pieces for the next year.
At our house we would receive a stocking full of candy, nuts, and a great big orange at the top. We were allowed to eat from our stocking all day long. In the evening we would gather in Cd. Juarez at an aunts house, with our stockings, for the Rosca de Reyes and hot chocolate. Today, as is tradition, some of my family members will gather in El Paso and enjoy each others company as they partake of the Ring of Kings, making wonderful memories to pass down to the next generation.

I love sending and receiving cards. You know that old tradition of sending a card when someone enters your mind and you think, Hmm I wonder what they're up to? In the age of electronics people tend to send e-cards and text messages, while this is fine, to me there's nothing like opening a card, from someone you haven't seen in a while, and reading their written words. It just sends goose bumps up my spine. Once I have read it, happy thoughts enter my mind, I close the card and admire the front. Thoughts of how special this person thought I was. Taking the time to choose a pretty card and writing a small note inside brings a big smile to my face. So, I thought I would write regarding the beginning of Christmas cards and showing you how I display my Christmas and New Years cards..

The first comercial Christmas card was introduced in December 1843 by John Horsley. A thousand copies, 12 of which still remain, were lithographed and sold in London. Louis Prang, a German who moved to the United States in 1850, introduced Christmas cards to America in 1875. Prang's early cards depicted humor, flowers, animals, elegant ladies, children, and scenes often related to Christmas.
Often his cards were mistaken for Valentines because they were so adorned with ribbons, lace, and flowers. He quit the card business in the 1890's, when the penny postcard craze swept the United States.

This card is made in Mexico.
Printers stand outside of stores in shopping areas with their type setting machines.
You choose the beautiful embossed card and the message.
Then the person meticulously type sets your name, city, and year on your embossed card.
By the time all your cards are printed the ink has dried and you go home with personalized
Christmas post cards. Thank you, Gracie, for taking the time to make these and taking me
down memory lane.

The above set holds a special place in my heart for it belonged to
my maternal grandmother. My mother inherited it then she passed
it on to me years ago. It is made in the old Mexican tradition with glass
eyes and hair eyelashes. I added some angels and the ram.

This set I received last year from my sister, bought in
Ciudad Juarez, Mex. They also have glass eyes and is
smaller than my grandmothers.

The above small Nativity was made in Japan, from the
40's or 50's. A small treasure.
You never know how tiny they may come.

The Christmas Tree

I wanted to share some Christmas tree information and pictures of my themed trees I enjoyed decorating.

In the 16th century, it is said, Martin Luther went wandering in the forest one clear Christmas eve night. He was so touched by the sight of the stars sparkling through the trees that he wanted to somehow share it with his children. He chopped down a fir , brought it home, and decorated it with candles to represent that starlight.

Later in the early 1900's since the Christmas tree was meant for children. The boughs were heavy with precious things. Among the tapered candles were hung intricate paper cut outs, cookies, pieces of taffy, tiny toys, gilded ornaments, strings of popcorn and cranberries, and dried flowers. At the peak a delicate angel floated or a gilded star sparkled. Small wrapped packages were fastened to the boughs with colorful string or ribbons, then removed and opened on Christmas Day.

Christmas Cottage 2010

It's time again for the Christmas Cottage and all the elves have been busy decorating, stocking the cottage, and baking lots of cookies. All in preparation for the annual shopping of gifts for good boys and girls. Like every year we are amazed at the many blessings of kindness and donations for the least fortunate. This years theme is Disney, as you remember last years theme was Dr. Seus. Shoppers step into a magical world filled with Christmas music and cookies.
Oh the wonderful stories this elf could tell of the many times we have shed tears of joy or joined someone in tears at the joy of anticipating the happiness that his/her children will have come Christmas Eve. We have just begun and in the coming week and a half we will add more wonderful stories to our memories and our hearts will be filled to capacity with joy and happiness.

As shoppers enter the shopping area they experience the magic
of Disney and begin selecting toys for their good boys and girls.

And we're walking. The stocking elves have divided the toys by age
group and separated the toys for boys and for girls.

The sofites, under the many decorated trees, are waiting
to be chosen by parents. Each child receives one.

Now you see the teen area and the family gift area, of which
parents can choose one family gift.

This is the book area, it's also sorted by age group to make
it easier for the parents to choose five books per child.
Oh those elves are so good at making things run smoothly.

This is our Christmas Stocking room. These elves return every year
to fill bags with Christmas stockings, filled of course, clothing for babies,
other small toys, wrapping paper and tape. All sorts of extra goodies are
prepared for each shopper and their kids.

Another one of our wonderful elves who makes sure
the back room is stocked, sorted, and tagged correctly.
Today was her Birthday!

The two elves from the Christmas Stoking room were mingling with
the two Head Elves and trying to take toys for their department.

One of our best elves! He is our hard worker picking up toys and
bikes, putting them together, and pumping tires. All so our bikes will
look their best. We can hear him working and hammering away in the back.

My sister the elf who is a hard worker and never
seems to sit down. This has become a family tradition for
her birthday.

Below you will find the cotton batting angels I finished. I think they turned out pretty cute. I may offer them as a class sometime in the future. I will post them on my website tomorrow and offer them for sale. The Santa will vary in faces and the angels will vary in embellishments, with a muff, or without. These are also around 6" tall.

The Wonders of the Holiday

Cotton batting has been on my mind this year and I finally made time to play with it. These little characters came out at six inches. I used some goat hair I had, for the longest time, for their beards and think it worked very well. I will continue to play and post new pictures as they are finished.

"Here We Come A Wassailing"

Well the Christmas holiday season has officially begun and I have been busy decorating and attending tree lighting events. This past week we attended the tree lighting, concert, and wassailing event in Denton, Texas. The courthouse was decorated with lots of glistening lights and was opened for the public to walk in and see the indoor Christmas displays along with historical pictures and history. We were to go to each store on the square to have a taste of their special wassail and at the end of our go around we had to vote who had the best tasing wassail. Some stores offered cookies and cake samples so as to clean our palettes before the tasting. There were carolers, a live nativity with shepherds strolling around, and of course music and dancers. We enjoyed the festive feel, the food that was sold around the square, and shopping.

Wassailing is an old English tradition. The drink is made of hot spiced ale or wine and baked apples. In this event it was spiced apple cider with other goodies added to it for competition. At early English Christmas celebrations a bowl of wassail was passed for everyone to sip from.
